City salt trucks made several passes on the icy roads Wednesday morning, but a sheet of black ice on one street sent a school bus skidding.
The bus loaded with children slid sideways and crashed into an oncoming minivan. Police said no one was hurt, but the children had to sit and wait for about an hour for a tow truck driver to clear the wrecked minivan and for a salt truck to come by.
Police said the bus driver was going under the speed limit, but the ice got the better of him.
A spokesman for Columbus Public Schools said three or four schools buses were involved in accidents, including one on Windings Hill Drive in northeast Columbus. Police also said the icy conditions were to blame. There was only one child on that bus and his parents picked him up. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital.
Similar road conditions are expected Thursday morning.
