I laughed when I heard how much money and actual pounds of salt were used on the Columbus roads, this past week! All I was thinking was how much money and pounds were just spent on blocking my car in, not clearing the side streets AT ALL, and how long it would be till school was back in and I was forced to try to drive around in the mess, that they had just created. Not to mention I couldn't even get into my car, when school was back in session Thursday, to take my kids to school. That gave me Thursday to accept the reality that school was in session Thursday and Friday and out again on Monday(?), to get my nerve and go do what had to be done, DE-ICE my car. The worst part of it Thursday, was remembering the first day they called off school, there wasn't any snow! It was because of the -13 below temps. Now, here we are, frozen into current parking position (sideways), because of all those trucks pushing the snow over to the side of the cars in the OSU Campus area and NOW schools back in???
I mean it's not like this happens every year. They just freak out and don't think about the current situation and just do the minimum mandatory requirements, that have nothing written in the law about taking CURRENT weather conditions into consideration.
Personally, I would love nothing more than the school year being a few days longer, because nature forcing us to take a little break in the world. In fact, it would be better for all of us working parents, to have a summer time break in those critical to business, daytime summer hours. I think the kids would be better off for it, because we would be showing them that they are #1. That they come first and are very valuable to our city! Not something that MUST bend and break, if thats what ends up happening, in this type of weather conditions.
The way that cars are parked on the streets right now is CRAZY to think of our Columbus Ohio bus drivers and ALL Columbus drivers (you know who you are), TRYING to navigate around snow packed side streets to pick up those poor kids (who are forced to use the streets for bus stops, because the sidewalks are 5'9 right now), is not in the city's best interest!
It does seem better to cancel the world for a few days, regroup when the weather brakes and make a plan for how to make up the time nature forced us to miss, then put down salt and spend the type of money that was spent recently on the issue, when the worse was yet to come.
I wish the world could just take a breather and just ride the storm out, TOGETHER. Children would be so much more relaxed, in my opinion, if they felt like their life was important enough to cancel the world for a few days. But... adults care about money too much for that! So... school will be back in session on "President's Day", for some school kids. : ( Cancel those darn school dances, "Professional Days", in class parties and make school get out later in the summer time, to make up for the snow days! Cummon!!! Time to re-evaluate!
Let's take the amount of money that was just spent on snow removal this year and put it into plans for days like these, to accommodate for the snowy years that Ohio might have. Like, if you have children or not, paid days off when the weather is as bad as it was this year. Then people might feel like their safety and heath are more important and start appreciating life!
Humbly descending from my soap box now,
